French Country Living in the Westside of LA
There is only the whisper of the canyon winds gently drifting from Coral trees to Palms, as we enter the magnificent French country traditional home at 2803 Mandeville Canyon Road. Gently placed upon nearly a half acre in the keenly secluded neighborhood of Brentwood, this 5 bedroom 4 1/2 bathroom estate offers us an immediate feeling of warmth and care.
Gazing up at the two-story foyer’s grand staircase, custom crown moldings, coffered ceilings and 6” wide-plank hickory floors, one could only imagine the joy of being greeted each day by such exquisite elegance. Still, there is something sincerely effortless about its design, with every square foot having meaningful purpose.
Warm rays of sunshine light up the front-facing, formal living and dining rooms; an impressive floor-to-ceiling fireplace with quartz surround in one will undoubtedly make banqueting or snuggling up with a good book quite pleasant. A pass-through butler’s pantry in the other leads into the chef’s dream kitchen.
“But our waking life, and our growing years, were for the most part spent in the kitchen, and until we married, or ran away, it was the common room we shared.” -Laurie Lee
We could practically taste the savory sauces, sweet and tender meats and freshly baked breads that have been stirred, sautéed and lovingly hand-made here. Even the most novice of cooks will be inspired to elevate their culinary repertoire with access to commercial quality appliances such as the six-burner Wolf gas stove and double ovens with Viking hood, Sub-Zero refrigerator, wine fridge and a Bosch dishwasher.
The country French sense of refinement and unassuming style continues in the kitchen’s fine finishings of the custom cabinetry with detailed moldings and hardware, original farm sink, and designer light fixtures. Acres of marble adorn the countertops and backsplash, accentuating the voluminous center island; also, the center of the home where intimate and gathered conversations can easily unfold.
Next, we stroll into the adjoining great room, airy and open like the kitchen, with a feature fireplace that beckons one to stay a while and relax. Blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living, both this room and the kitchen are brightened by a wall of French and Sidelite doors that can be opened up to the cool breeze and lushness of the backyard pool area and garden.
A Pool & Luscious Garden Party
As we tour the extraordinary grounds, we delight in the sweet, citrusy, and floral fragrances of the exotic fruit trees, plants and flowers. It would certainly be satisfying to stroll up the railroad tie steps and along the terraced garden path to pick blackberries, passion fruit or even bananas (from the dwarf Namwa banana tree) for breakfast. Sigh.
For entertainers, this outdoor space ticks all the boxes. An inviting pool with a vining garden grotto spa features a soothing, cascading waterfall. There is also a comfy sitting area that surrounds a large firepit where guests can relax while you prepare a feast on the outdoor Jenn-Air kitchen. The bougainvillea draped trellis shades the patio, perfectly suited for dinner and family parties. The expansive, flat yard, with drought- and maintenance-friendly artificial grass, welcomes playtime for kids and pets alike.
Before venturing upstairs, we note two, quiet and spacious bedrooms that are warmly carpeted. Both enjoy outside access via French doors and are joined by a Jack and Jill bathroom. An elegant powder room can be found near the foyer.
Spacious Living at the Top of the Stairs
At the top of the landing, we note the hickory wood floors continue, then spy the laundry room and a large and bright sitting room, perfect for homework, watching TV or simply kicking up one’s feet. The dual sky lights pour in natural light, bringing our eyes up to the magnificent coffered ceiling – a worthy opponent to a beautiful day or starry night.
Through another set of French doors, we find ourselves on a slate tiled balcony that spans to the master suite. We stop to peer out at the spectacular view of the lush garden, pool and hillside and to dream just a little while…
The crème de la crème of this home is the master suite. French rustic meets chic design, which is reflected in the decorative, beamed and vaulted ceilings, grand fireplace and mantle. Hours will surely be luxuriated away in the Crema & Botticino marbled en-suite that features an enormous steam shower, claw foot tub, double sinks, and an impressive, well-organized walk-in closet. An alcove office efficiently uses valuable square footage inside a dormer.
Quietly situated on the opposite side of this home are two sunny and sizable bedrooms, each with a bathroom en suite, large closets and barefoot-friendly carpeting. Linens and such can be neatly tucked away in the ample cabinetry located in the central hallway.
To finish the tour, we peek into the two-car garage with a door to the artificially-turfed dog run. We hop in our car and continue through the circle driveway and down the old-growth, tree-lined street.
Neighborhood Stomping Grounds
Our guide informs us that Brentwood Village is the stomping grounds for most of the area’s residents, where places like Whole Foods, Starbucks, Lemonade, and the US Postal Service make shopping and errand-running quite convenient. Burlington Street offers smaller boutique shops and is a stones throw to Santa Monica proper. Sunset Boulevard is a corridor street to Malibu (approximately 30 minutes) and an easy 10 minutes to the 405 freeway.
There’s something very special about 2803 Mandeville Canyon Road. It must be experienced to understand how this home impresses upon a visitor like a memory of travels through the gentle hills and valleys of rural France. Give yourself a taste of contemporary, French country living and make an appointment to visit. Anyone would be fortunate to call this place maison, sweet maison.
